As I assume the presidency of Georgia Nurses Association, the debate rages over an issue that is of concern to all of us--health care reform--and I don't use the term "raging" lightly. It is impossible to know at the time I am writing this what form any legislation will take when Congress returns from the Summer recess, but this much is certain: the level of discourse needs to rise to a much higher level if we as a nation are going to accept both the challenge and the opportunity to bring about meaningful change. Our health care delivery system has been in disarray for years. Any system which denies care to some 49 million Americans cannot lay claim to having the "best" health care system in the world, and I am dismayed every time I hear this stereotype repeated. There is a huge difference between having outstanding nurses, physicians, therapists and technologies, and being able to deliver those resources to all of the people who need them, especially the most vulnerable among us. In the midst of all the shouting and misinformation filling town hall meetings on reform and in the media that fact seems to have been lost on many.
